What We Are

The Cedars is many things to its more than 300 residents. But for all it is a comprehensive retirement community dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of its residents.

Located on a beautifully landscaped 57-acre campus in McPherson, Kansas, The Cedars offers a full continuum of care – from independent living to comprehensive health care.

A focal point of the campus is our gazebo, site of many special events, picnics and ice cream socials! It is located near a small lake that is home to ducks and surrounded by trails, natural grasses and a wooded area.

A not-for-profit community associated with the Church of the Brethren and Free Methodist Church, The Cedars retirement community places care, concern and support of our residents above all else. To our residents that means peace of mind, security and a sense of belonging.

Our Beginnings

The oldest continuing care retirement community in Kansas, The Cedars was founded as a home for the elderly and orphans in 1893 by the German Baptist Brethren.

The first facility was located in Booth (now known as Darlow), 13 miles southwest of Hutchinson, and was built at a cost of $7,400. It was known as the Old Folks Infirm and Orphans Home Association of the German Baptist Brethren.

The Cedars, an accredited nonprofit retirement community in McPherson, Kansas, has won awards for pain control, resident care and security, in its independent and assisted living, health care, licensed skilled nursing home and secure dementia facilities with rehabilitation and daycare services for seniors. Pets allowed.

The orphanage was discontinued in 1930 when it became apparent that serving both children and the elderly were incompatible missions. A devastating tornado and outmoded facilities finally forced the home to close in 1952.

A search began, and the home relocated to McPherson, a community centrally located for the Brethren. A new facility later was found when a retiring dentist offered to sell his home on a three-acre plot on Kansas Avenue close to a city park. Due to the abundance of cedar trees on the property, the facility became known as The Cedars in 1961.

Duplexes and a multi-storied building, known as The Towers, were built on the property. Anticipating future growth, the Board of Directors purchased 57 acres at Maxwell and First Streets. At the new site, duplexes, an assisted living complex with apartments and a HealthCare Center were built in the following years.

Today all facilities and services are located on the First Avenue campus. And the growth continues. A recently completed capital campaign raised $2.4 million for construction of a Wellness Center that will add a new dimension to life at The Cedars. Our Cedars Houses, stand alone home for 12-14 folks are opening in March, 2006, as a brand new concept in traditional skilled care.
